There’s a specific kind of light that only shows up in Toulouse in October. Around 5.30pm, the sun drops low enough to hit the brick facades of the Capitole at an angle, and for about twenty minutes the whole square turns the colour of a peach that’s just slightly too ripe.
Here’s why this month deserves a proper look, and how to make the most of it.
Why visit Toulouse in October is a good idea
The heatwaves this region gets now make the old idea of a “fabulous hot summer” a bit much to handle, if we’re honest. Autumn has quietly become the better bet. And autumn here isn’t the autumn you’d know from the UK, a sharp, early drop into grey and cold. It’s closer to an endless Indian summer that can stretch comfortably into late November: golden light, warmth that lingers, skies that stay blue far longer than they should.
Practically, that means:
- Fewer crowds. Summer visitors have gone home, students are back but not yet buried in work.
- Cheaper hotels. Rates soften noticeably once you’re past the summer season.
- Actual restaurant availability, even on Place Wilson or Rue de Taur on a weekday evening.
- Weather you can hike and walk in properly, without wilting.
Things to do in Toulouse in October
Walk or cycle the Canal du Midi.
October light on the water, without the summer crowds of cyclists. One of the simplest, best free things to do in the city.
Get out to the Forêt de Bouconne.
Just west of Toulouse. A proper autumn forest, all rust and copper, easy to reach for a half-day without a long drive.
Go hiking for the colours.
This is where October really earns its reputation. Two of the best-known options within reach:
- Cirque de Gavarnie, in the Pyrenees, one of the most spectacular hikes in the region and stunning in autumn light.
- Lac de Bethmale, a well-loved autumn hike, particularly known for its colours this time of year.
Toulouse les Orgues
runs through the month, filling the city’s churches with organ music in venues most visitors never think to walk into otherwise.
Grape harvest
In Fronton and Gaillac is winding down, so tasting rooms are pouring fresh-pressed juice alongside the usual barrel samples. A good half-day out of town if you’ve got a car.
Weather, practically
Expect 15 to 21°C during the day, dropping into single digits after dark. Rain arrives in short, sharp bursts off the Pyrenees, rarely settling in for the whole day. Pack layers and something waterproof and foldable, and you’re set.
